  <common_name>Dicyclohexyl phthalate</common_name>
  <class>SmallMolecule</class>
<description>Dicyclohexyl phthalate (C20H26O4) is a solid at room temperature with an average molecular weight of 330.42 g/mol. Dicyclohexyl phthalate belongs to the benzoic acids and derivatives, a subclass of benzene and substituted derivatives within the organic compounds. This exogenous compound is used industrially as a plasticizer and as processing aids not otherwise specified.

The substance is present in plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, and ethylene-vinyl acetate, and it is released in polystyrene and polypropylene. It has been found in or released from 25 recorded sources, including drinking water, indoor air, and various household cleaning and consumer products such as soap detergents, bleaching agents, and perfumes within detergents and soaps. Other sources include tobacco smoke filters, food contact materials, fermentation processes for beer, processing meats, and building and construction materials such as stairs and ramps as well as sunshades awnings or outside screens. Additionally, it is associated with electrical and electronic equipment, including electric switches, electric hearing aids, discharge lamps, communication cables or conductors, and conductors or conductive bodies characterised by the conductive materials.

Exposure routes include touch, oral, and inhalation. Dicyclohexyl phthalate has six recorded protein targets, including the estrogen receptor (ESR1), nuclear receptor subfamily 1 group I member 2 (NR1I2), retinoic acid receptor RXR-beta (RXRB), and the vitamin D3 receptor (VDR), along with two other proteins. Its presence in polyamide remains inconclusive, and it has not been detected in polycarbonate.</description>

<mechanism_of_toxicity>Phthalate esters are endocrine disruptors. They decrease foetal testis testosterone production and reduce the expression of steroidogenic genes by decreasing mRNA expression. Some phthalates have also been shown to reduce the expression of insulin-like peptide 3 (insl3), an important hormone secreted by the Leydig cell necessary for development of the gubernacular ligament. Animal studies have shown that these effects disrupt reproductive development and can cause a number of malformations in affected young. (A2883)</mechanism_of_toxicity>
<metabolism>Phthalate esters are first hydrolyzed to their monoester derivative. Once formed, the monoester derivative can be further hydrolyzed in vivo to phthalic acid or conjugated to glucuronide, both of which can then be excreted. The terminal or next-to-last carbon atom in the monoester can also be oxidized to an alcohol, which can be excreted as is or first oxidized to an aldehyde, ketone, or carboxylic acid. The monoester and oxidative metabolites are excreted in the urine and faeces. (A2884)</metabolism>

<use_source>Phthalate esters are mainly used as plasticizers, primarily used to soften polyvinyl chloride. They are found in a number of products, including glues, building materials, personal care products, detergents and surfactants, packaging, children's toys, paints, pharmaceuticals, food products, and textiles. Phthalates are used in a variety of household applications such as shower curtains, vinyl upholstery, adhesives, floor tiles, food containers and wrappers, and cleaning materials. Personal care items containing phthalates include perfume, eye shadow, moisturizer, nail polish, liquid soap, and hair spray. (L1903)</use_source>
