Description
Styrene belongs to the styrenes, a subclass of benzene and substituted derivatives within the organic compounds. This exogenous liquid has the formula C8H8 and an average molecular weight of 104.15 g/mol. Industrially, it is used as a fragrance, flavouring and nutrient, binder, monomer, solvent (PMC10610633, PMC9297536), and additive (PMC12473329). It is a volatile organic compound (PMC6918274) and a precursor to polystyrene and several copolymers. It is used in High-Density Polyethylene, Low-Density Polyethylene, Polystyrene, Expanded polystyrene, and Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and is present in High impact polystyrene. Biologically, styrene acts as a plant metabolite, mutagen, virulence factor (PMC9830902), and biomarker (PMC13043307). It is a substrate of Myoglobin (MB). Its metabolite, Styrene 7,8-oxide, is mutagenic and can form DNA adducts by binding to deoxyguanosine, causing DNA strand breaks, chromosomal aberrations, micronucleated cells, and increased frequency of sister chromatid exchange. Styrene is found in various sources, including electrical and electronic equipment, household cleaning and consumer products, building and construction materials, household items, drinking water, and food processing (such as the preparation of vinegar and fermentation processes for beer). Exposure occurs via oral, touch, and inhalation routes (PMC11294665, PMC12149764, PMC12681231, PMC3020673, PMC3463241, PMC7586998), as well as through smoking (PMC6763388). Health effects associated with styrene include asthma (PMC11294665, PMC9923029), inflammation (PMC12681231), sensorineural hearing loss (PMC3658808), and depression, headache, and fatigue (PMC8160766). It is linked to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, tiredness, and seizure (PMC6712572), as well as an increase in autism spectrum disorder and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PMC6712572). Furthermore, styrene is associated with cancer (PMC7586998, PMC8869180, PMC9961358), specifically lung cancer (PMC11932287, PMC13043307, PMC7464039), breast cancer (PMC11425761), and lymphoma (PMC8606437), and serves as a biomarker of cancer (PMC7464039).

Toxicity Profile
Mechanism of ToxicityStyrene 7,8-oxide, a metabolite of styrene, can form DNA adducts by binding to deoxyguanosine. It is also mutagenic and causes increased frequency of sister chromatid exchange, chromosomal aberrations, micronucleated cells, and DNA strand breaks. (5)
Carcinogenicity (IARC Classification)2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans. (4)
Minimum Risk LevelAcute Inhalation: 2 ppm (3) Chronic Inhalation: 0.2 ppm (3) Acute Oral: 0.1 mg/kg/day (3)
SymptomsBreathing high levels of styrene may cause nervous system effects such as changes in color vision, tiredness, feeling drunk, slowed reaction time, concentration problems, or balance problems. Chest burning, wheezing, and dyspnea may also occur. Styrene is irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. (5, 6)
TreatmentTreatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive. Respiratory assistance may be needed. (6)
