Description
Silver acetylide is an exogenous organic compound with the formula C2HAg and an average molecular weight of 132.90 g/mol. It exists as a solid at room temperature. Silver acetylide belongs to the acetylides, a superclass within the organic compounds. The compound interacts with 16 recorded protein targets. The silver ion inhibits the activity of NA+,K+-ATPase, which disrupts intracellular ion concentrations; affected proteins include the sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit gamma (FXYD2), sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-1 (ATP1A1), sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-2 (ATP1A2), sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-3 (ATP1A3), and four other proteins. Additionally, the silver ion inhibits glutathione peroxidase activity, thereby disrupting selenium-catalyzed sulfhydryl oxidation-reduction reactions. The proteins involved in this process include epididymal secretory glutathione peroxidase (GPX5), glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1), glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPX2), glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3), and four other proteins.

Chemical Taxonomy
Description Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as acetylides. Acetylides are compounds arising by replacement of one or both hydrogen atoms of acetylene (ethyne) by a metal or other cationic group. E.G. NaC#CH monosodium acetylide. By extension, analogous compounds derived from terminal acetylenes, RC#CH. The class is limited here to derivatives of acetylene where the hydrogen atom is replaced with an element with similar or lower electronegativity that carbon.

Toxicity Profile
Toxicity ValuesNot Available
Toxicity / Toxin ClassNot Available
Mechanism of ToxicityMetallic silver is oxidized and may deposit in the tissues, causing arygria. The silver ion is known to inhibit glutathione peroxidase and NA+,K+-ATPase activity, disrupting selenium-catalyzed sulfhydryl oxidation-reduction reactions and intracellular ion concentrations, respectively. Silver nanoparticles are believed to disrupt the mitochondrial respiratory chain, causing oxidative stress, reduced ATP synthesis, and DNA damage. (5, 1, 2, 3, 4)
Carcinogenicity (IARC Classification)No indication of carcinogenicity to humans (not listed by IARC).
Minimum Risk LevelNot Available
SymptomsExposure to high levels of silver for a long period of time may result in a condition called arygria, a blue-gray discoloration of the skin and other body tissues. Argyria is a permanent effect but does not appear to be harmful to health. Exposure to high levels of silver in the air has resulted in breathing problems, lung and throat irritation, and stomach pains. Skin contact with silver can cause mild allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, and inflammation in some people. (5)
