Description
Selenium Sulfide is an exogenous inorganic compound with the formula SSe and an average molecular weight of 111.03 g/mol. At room temperature, it exists as a solid. Selenium Sulfide belongs to the other non-metal sulfides, a subclass of other non-metal organides within the inorganic compounds. This compound is utilized as an antifungal agent and a cytostatic agent that slows the growth of hyperproliferative cells in seborrhea. It serves as the active ingredient in shampoos used to treat tinea capitis, a fungal infection primarily affecting preadolescent children, as well as seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Selenium Sulfide is found in or released from nine recorded sources. These include healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and veterinary products, specifically antifungals for dermatological use. It is also present in electrical and electronic equipment such as electrically stimulated smoking devices and discharge lamps. Additionally, it is found in household cleaning and consumer products, including soap dispensers, bleaching agents, cigar cigarettes, non-electric simulated smoking devices, and other smoking requisites. The recorded exposure route for this compound is topical.

Toxicity Profile
Mechanism of ToxicitySelenium sulfide can be decomposed to selenium ions. Selenium readily substitutes for sulfur in biomolecules and in many biochemical reactions, especially when the concentration of selenium is high and the concentration of sulfur is low. Inactivation of the sulfhydryl enzymes necessary for oxidative reactions in cellular respiration, through effects on mitochondrial and microsomal electron transport, might contribute to acute selenium toxicity. Selenomethionine (a common organic selenium compound) also appears to randomly substitute for methionine in protein synthesis. This substitution may affect the structure and functionability of the protein, for example, by altering disulfide bridges. Inorganic forms of selenium appear to react with tissue thiols by redox catalysis, resulting in formation of reactive oxygen species and causing damage by oxidative stress. (5)
Carcinogenicity (IARC Classification)3, not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. (4)
Minimum Risk LevelChronic Oral: 0.005 mg/kg/day (3)
SymptomsNo documented reports of serious toxicity in humans resulting from acute ingestion of selenium sulfide, however, acute toxicity studies in animals suggest that ingestion of large amounts could result in potential human toxicity. (6)
TreatmentEvacuation of the stomach contents should be considered in cases of acute oral ingestion. (7)
