Description
Moclobemide is an exogenous solid with the formula C13H17ClN2O2 and an average molecular weight of 268.74 g/mol. Moclobemide belongs to the benzoic acids and derivatives, a subclass of benzene and substituted derivatives within the organic compounds. It is recorded as being found in or released from 18 sources, including antidepressants within healthcare, pharmaceuticals and veterinary products; food preservation and fermentation processes for beer within food, food processing and cookware; and various household cleaning and consumer products such as soap dispensers, pipe accessories, perfumes within detergents and soaps, other smoking requisites, and non electric simulated smoking devices. Additionally, it is found in electrical and electronic equipment, including electrodes, emergency protective devices, electric switches, conductors or conductive bodies characterised by the conductive materials, and electrically stimulated smoking devices. The recorded exposure route for this compound is oral. The compound acts on two recorded protein targets. It serves as an antagonist of Amine oxidase [flavin-containing] B (MAOB) and targets Amine oxidase [flavin-containing] A (MAOA). The mechanism of action of moclobemide involves the selective, reversible inhibition of MAO-A. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the metabolism and destruction of monoamines in the neurotransmitters. This results in an increase in the monoamines, relieving depressive symptoms. Consequently, it is used to treat major depressive disorder as a reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) selective for isoform A (RIMA).

Amine oxidase [flavin-containing] A structureClick to view 3D structureAmine oxidase [flavin-containing] AP21397HumansKnownThe mechanism of action of moclobemide involves the selective, reversible inhibition of MAO-A. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the metabolism and destruction of monoamines in the neurotransmitters. This results in an increase in the monoamines, relieving depressive symptoms.
