Description
L-Serine belongs to the amino acids, peptides, and analogues, a subclass of carboxylic acids and derivatives within the organic compounds. It has the chemical formula C3H7NO3 and an average molecular weight of 105.09 g/mol. This endogenous compound is a solid at room temperature. In biological contexts, L-serine acts as a human metabolite, an amino acid (PMC12019920), an agonist (PMC7121180), and an antioxidant (PMC13072972). Industrially, it is utilized as a nutrient and flavouring agent. L-serine is detected in the prostate and all tissues. It interacts with eight recorded protein targets, including Serine palmitoyltransferase 2 (SPTLC2), Serine racemase (SRR), L-serine dehydratase/L-threonine deaminase (SDS), and Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS). The compound is found in 28 recorded sources, including drinking water, food processing and cookware (such as the preparation of vinegar, malt, beer, and wine or sparkling wine), household cleaning and consumer products (such as soap detergents, bleaching agents, and perfumes within detergents and soaps), and electrical and electronic equipment (such as electric switches, electric hearing aids, and antennas, coils, conductors or conductive bodies characterised by the conductive materials). The recorded exposure route is oral. Regarding health effects, L-serine is used as a treatment for cancer (PMC13400281). It is found to be decreased in the urine of individuals with obesity (PMC13019795) and is elevated in the blood of those with breast cancer (PMC9910008).

Toxicity Profile
Mechanism of ToxicityL-Serine plays a role in cell growth and development (cellular proliferation). The conversion of L-serine to glycine by serine hydroxymethyltransferase results in the formation of the one-carbon units necessary for the synthesis of the purine bases, adenine and guanine. These bases when linked to the phosphate ester of pentose sugars are essential components of DNA and RNA and the end products of energy producing metabolic pathways, ATP and GTP. In addition, L-serine conversion to glycine via this same enzyme provides the one-carbon units necessary for production of the pyrimidine nucleotide, deoxythymidine monophosphate, also an essential component of DNA.
Carcinogenicity (IARC Classification)No indication of carcinogenicity to humans (not listed by IARC).
