Description
Dihydrotestosterone is an endogenous compound with the formula C19H30O2 and an average molecular weight of 290.44 g/mol. It exists as a solid at room temperature. Dihydrotestosterone belongs to the androstane steroids, a subclass of steroids and steroid derivatives within the organic compounds. Biologically, it functions as an androgen (PMC7477889 ), an agonist (PMC9869926 ), and a metabolite (PMC4876981 ). The compound is detected in various tissues, including the prostate, testes, adrenal gland, adrenal cortex, gonads, liver, kidney, muscle, skin, hair, myelin, neuron, thyroid gland, and fibroblasts. Its recorded protein targets include the androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor (ESR1), progesterone receptor (PGR), glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1), and four other proteins. Dihydrotestosterone is associated with several health effects, including prostate cancer (PMC2072856 ) and hypospadias (PMC2944405 ). It is also associated with a decrease in infertility (PMC13379425 ), cryptorchidism (PMC13379425 ), and hypospadias (PMC13379425 ). Beyond biological systems, dihydrotestosterone has been found in 23 recorded sources. These include household cleaning and consumer products such as soap detergents, soap dispensers, tobacco smoke filters, and perfumes within detergents and soaps. It is also found in building and construction materials like ladders, stairs and ramps, ceilings, and sunshades awnings or outside screens. Additionally, it is detected in food, food processing and cookware—specifically the preparation of wine or sparkling wine, preparation of vinegar, preparation of wort, food preservation, and processing fish. Finally, it is recorded in electrical and electronic equipment, including electrodes, fixed capacitors and their manufacture, electric switches, electrically stimulated smoking devices, and conductors or conductive bodies characterised by the conductive materials.
