Description
Isoprenaline is an endogenous compound with the formula C11H17NO3 and an average molecular weight of 211.26 g/mol. It exists as a solid at room temperature. Isoprenaline belongs to the benzenediols, a subclass of phenols within the organic compounds. This compound acts as a biological agonist (PMC3920298 ) and serves as a modulator or stabilization agent for protein targets including the Beta-1, Beta-2, and Beta-3 adrenergic receptors (ADRB1, ADRB2, ADRB3), as well as the Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase regulatory subunit alpha (PIK3R1) and five other proteins. It is used as a heart stimulant and a bronchodilator. In terms of healthcare and veterinary applications, it is categorized among drugs for obstructive airway diseases and cardiac stimulants excluding cardiac glycosides. Its recorded exposure routes include intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, respiratory, and intracardiac administration. Isoprenaline has been associated with myocardial infarction (PMC4661898 ). Isoprenaline is found in or released from 17 recorded sources. These include healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and veterinary products; food, food processing, and cookware, specifically the treatment of hops and the preparation of wine or sparkling wine, as well as food preservation; and electrical and electronic equipment, including television systems, electrodes, conductive bodies, and electrically stimulated smoking devices. It is also found in building and construction materials such as ladders, and in household cleaning and consumer products, including bleaching agents, perfumes within soaps and detergents, cigar cigarettes, non-electric simulated smoking devices, and other smoking requisites.

Mechanism of ToxicityThe pharmacologic effects of isoproterenol are at least in part attributable to stimulation through beta-adrenergic receptors of intracellular adenyl cyclase, the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic AMP. Increased cyclic AMP levels are associated with relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of release of mediators of immediate hypersensitivity from cells, especially from mast cells.
Carcinogenicity (IARC Classification)No indication of carcinogenicity to humans (not listed by IARC).
