Description
Perchlorate (ClO4) is an inorganic compound with an average molecular weight of 99.45 g/mol. Perchlorate belongs to the non-metal perchlorates, a subclass of non-metal oxoanionic compounds within the inorganic compounds. Biologically, it acts as an endocrine disruptor (PMC4508251) and targets the protein arsenate reductase (arsC). Its health effects include an increase in hypothyroidism (PMC4508251) and an association with diabetes mellitus (PMC11916920). The compound is released from polyvinyl chloride plastics and is found in 26 recorded sources. These include electrical and electronic equipment such as amplifiers, antennas, auxiliary devices, coils, and communication cables or conductors, among eight others. It is also present in food, food processing and cookware, specifically in food contact materials, the processing of meats, the treatment of hops, and the preparation of malt, wine, or sparkling wine. Additional sources include household cleaning and consumer products, such as tobacco product cases, tobacco pipes, pipe accessories, other smoking requisites, and non-electric simulated smoking devices. In building and construction, it is found in ladders and sunshades, awnings, or outside screens. Recorded exposure routes include oral, touch, and inhalation, with literature support specifically for inhalation (PMC4508251).
