Description
Oxygen (O2) is an inorganic compound with an average molecular weight of 32.00 g/mol. Oxygen belongs to the other non-metal oxides, a subclass of other non-metal organides within the inorganic compounds. In industrial contexts, it serves as a catalyst (PMC3818381), a softener and conditioner, and a degradant or impurity. Biologically, it functions as an electron acceptor (PMC11189586) and an inhibitor (PMC11479229, PMC4881554, PMC9325326), while acting as an environmental nutrient (PMC1236956, PMC6956277). It is used in Low-Density Polyethylene. Oxygen acts as an agonist and an activator/binder of Myoglobin (MB), Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (MT-CO1), and NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1). Oxygen is found in or released from 74 recorded sources, including household items such as coins, medals, and key rings; building and construction materials like roofs, floors, and ceilings; food processing applications such as fermentation processes for beer and food preservation; household cleaning and consumer products including bleaching agents and ash trays; electrical and electronic equipment such as amplifiers and antennas; and unclassified therapeutic products. Recorded exposure routes include nasal, oral, respiratory, and topical, with inhalation supported by literature (PMC10797627, PMC11342404, PMC11711661, PMC12107167, PMC12500755, PMC13257756, PMC3145497, PMC3248633, PMC3374490, PMC4296973). Health effects associated with oxygen include cancer (PMC6158745), inflammation (PMC10288928, PMC9952306), and an increase in asthma (PMC9025817), while it is associated with a decrease in disease (PMC3920658) and memory loss (PMC10889477). It is decreased in the blood in cancer (PMC7710128). Therapeutically, oxygen is used for COVID-19 (PMC7705939), pneumonitis (PMC5721695), respiratory failure (PMC1492602), croup (PMC7121951), bronchospasm (PMC1492602, PMC7121951), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (PMC8543113), and myocardial infarction (PMC11086401), the latter of which also involves a decrease in necrosis (PMC11086401). It has therapeutic effects on pain (PMC9556195), ischemia (PMC12030672), cancer (PMC13104097), osteomyelitis (PMC10288928), and inflammation (PMC7578793).
